The Salvation Army issues call for support this holiday season

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Nov. 27, 2018) – As Black Friday and Cyber Monday give way to Giving Tuesday, a day promoting global giving, The Salvation Army’s annual Red Kettle Campaign is underway, and the nonprofit organization is urging supporters to join the Fight for Good. With donations to more than 30,000 kettles nationwide and online at Give.SalvationArmyUSA.org, the iconic 128-year-old campaign is the most crucial fundraising period for The Salvation Army, annually supporting more than 23 million Americans in need.

“Giving Tuesday provides the perfect opportunity to highlight the impact donations make in helping feed, clothe and shelter those facing the challenges of poverty,” said Commissioner David Hudson, national commander of The Salvation Army. “With just 28 giving days left until Christmas, every donation counts.”

For part of its own Giving Tuesday celebrations, The Salvation Army’s 2018 celebrity ambassador – actress, executive producer and New York Times best-selling author Candace Cameron Bure – will make national appearances to raise awareness of the need for donations this holiday season.

“I’ve been able to visit programs and meet extraordinary people serving with and being served by The Salvation Army and have seen the difference these people and programs make, firsthand,” Bure said. “Every dollar and quarter dropped into the red kettles or contributed online makes a difference. You may not know who’s struggling in your community, but your donation helps your neighbors and friends in need.”

During the holiday season, more than 3 million families rely on The Salvation Army to provide them with a warm meal or toys for their children on Christmas Day. Donating to the red kettles also helps the Army provide more than 9 million nights of shelter and 52 million meals a year, along with substance abuse recovery programs, after-school programs, and emergency shelter for children and families in need.

To make an impact on this instrumental day, the Red Kettle Campaign offers several methods of giving:

  • Donate $21 and have it matched through a challenge by Ezekiel “Zeke” Elliott, running back for the Dallas Cowboys. Both Zeke and the Dallas Cowboys will match all $21 donations made, up to $21,000 each. Also, a portion of all sales from shopzeke21.com will be donated to The Salvation Army.
  • Ask Amazon Alexa to donate by saying, “Alexa, donate to The Salvation Army,” then specifying the amount (new this year).
  • Visit Give.SalvationArmyUSA.org.
  • Drop money into one of the thousands of red kettles at partner storefront locations.
  • Give any amount by texting “KETTLES” to 91999.
  • Donate using Apple Pay or Google Pay at participating red kettle locations in Seattle, Dallas/Fort Worth, Kansas City, and New York City.

A small donation can go a long way. Nationally, on average:

  • A donation of $30 provides a night of shelter.
  • Just $25 can put Christmas presents under the tree for a child in need.
  • A $50 donation provides 21 meals for the hungry.

This holiday season marks the 128th Red Kettle Campaign since the program’s humble beginnings in San Francisco in 1891. The Red Kettle Campaign has grown into one of the most recognizable and important charitable campaigns in the United States, providing toys for kids, coats for the homeless and food for the hungry, as well as supporting countless social service programs year-round.
