Commissioner David Hudson of The Salvation Army travels to three cities to highlight exceptional efforts in the fight against homelessness

For the second stop on his nationwide Fight For Good Tour, The Salvation Army’s National Commander, Commissioner David Hudson, visited Atlanta for a firsthand look at the services the Army is providing and to speak with community leaders about the work that still needs to be done.

On Monday, September 16, the Commissioner started his day with a tour of Red Shield Services, which provides refuge and safe lodging for homeless men, women, and families in crisis. He met with current and former residents, including military veterans and employees who used to call the facility home.

That afternoon, Atlanta City Council President Felicia Moore hosted the Commissioner at city hall to discuss how The Salvation Army and the city of Atlanta can work together to better address the city’s poverty problem. The National Commander then presented the Atlanta City Council with The Salvation Army’s highest civic honor, the “Others Award,” for its tireless efforts in the fight for good. Over the past decade, the number of the city of Atlanta’s homeless population has been cut almost in half – one of the sharpest declines in the country.

After the presentation, Commissioner Hudson toured the Fuqua Boys and Girls Club. There, he spoke with a military veteran living at Red Shield Services with his children, who attend after-school programming at the Boys and Girls Club.

To end the day, Commissioner Hudson met with Cathryn Marchman, the executive director for Partners for Home and a thought leader in the city’s efforts to prevent and end homelessness.

On Wednesday, September 18, the National Commander traveled to Chicago, Illinois, to visit with local leaders and speak to those in Illinois who fight poverty on the ground, every day.
